IPL TREATMENT FOR DRY EYE DISEASE

Close-up of an eye with dry eye syndrome text.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy treats dry eye disease primarily caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). By applying gentle light pulses around the eyes, it reduces inflammation, kills eyelid bacteria, and melts clogged oils. Most patients require 3 to 4 initial sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart.

How IPL Works for Dry Eye.  IPL addresses the root causes of evaporative dry eye through several mechanisms:

  • Heating and Unclogging: The gentle thermal energy melts thickened oils (meibum) trapped in the meibomian glands, allowing them to flow naturally and stabilize your tear film.
  • Reducing Inflammation: IPL light targets and closes abnormal blood vessels around the eyelids, decreasing the release of inflammatory chemicals that cause gland dysfunction.
  • Eliminating Microbes: It reduces the load of Demodex mites and harmful bacteria that often contribute to blepharitis and eyelid blockage

Always consult with your eyecare provider prior to treatment to see if IPL is right for you

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE

The Session: A typical session is fast, usually taking about 10 to 15 minutes. The technician will apply a cool gel to the treatment area and give you protective eyewear.

Procedure: Flashes of polychromatic light are applied to the skin around your lower eyelids and upper cheek areas.

Post-Treatment: The treatment is generally painless with no downtime, though you will need to avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunblock for the first two days.

RESULTS AND MAINTENANCE

Over 90% of patients reported satisfaction, noting improvements in tear breakup time and a decrease in burning and grittiness. While the results are fast-acting, they are temporary. Most patients require maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months to sustain the effects. -(Optometrists.org, EyeWiki, Horvath Vision)

COST

  • Cost: Out-of-pocket costs typically range from $300 to $500 per session. we charge less because we know insurance generally doesn't cover this. Visit our SHOP page for pricing.
  • Insurance: Because it is often classified as a cosmetic or elective procedure, standard vision insurance rarely covers IPL for dry eye, though some health savings accounts (HSAs) may apply. Local eye providers don't usually provide this service at their clinics but many recommend it.  Talk to your eye doctor to see if it is right for you.
